Jonathan Joss, renowned for voicing John Redcorn in the animated series King of the Hill, was tragically shot and killed on June 1, 2025, in San Antonio, Texas. He was 59 years old.
San Antonio police responded to reports of a shooting on the city’s south side and found Joss with multiple gunshot wounds near the roadway. Despite life-saving efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The suspect, identified as 58-year-old neighbor Sigfredo Alvarez Ceja, was apprehended a block away and charged with murder. Neighbors reported a longstanding feud between the two men, with frequent arguments and confrontations, though none had previously escalated to violence.
Joss’s husband, Tristan Kern de Gonzales, revealed that the couple had endured years of harassment and threats due to their same-sex relationship. In January 2025, their home was destroyed in a fire, leading to the loss of their dogs and personal belongings. On the day of the shooting, they were visiting the site when the fatal incident occurred.
Born in San Antonio, Joss was of Comanche and White Mountain Apache descent. He studied theater and speech at Our Lady of the Lake University and had a career spanning over three decades, including roles in Parks and Recreation, Ray Donovan, True Grit, and The Magnificent Seven.
Joss was set to reprise his role as John Redcorn in the upcoming King of the Hill revival on Hulu, scheduled for release in August 2025.
His untimely death has sparked discussions on homophobic violence and the safety of LGBTQ+ individuals. Fans and colleagues remember Joss for his impactful portrayals and contributions to Native American representation in media.
