You’ll Remember Her from MASH – Loretta Swit Passes Away at 87

Loretta Swit, the Emmy-winning actress best known for her role as Major Margaret “Hot Lips” Houlihan on the iconic television series MASH*, has died at the age of 87. Her representative confirmed that she passed away peacefully at her home in New York on May 30, 2025, due to natural causes.

A Defining Television Role

Swit’s portrayal of Major Houlihan on MASH*—a groundbreaking series set during the Korean War—spanned the entire run of the show from 1972 to 1983. She was one of only two actors to appear in both the pilot episode and the highly watched series finale, which drew over 106 million viewers, making it one of the most-watched television events in U.S. history.

Swit received ten Emmy nominations for her role and won the award twice. Her performance helped redefine the character of Major Houlihan, evolving her from a caricature into a strong, intelligent, and deeply human figure. The role remains a significant milestone in the portrayal of women in television.

A Life Beyond the Screen

Outside of her acting career, Swit was a passionate advocate for animal rights. She was the author of SwitHeart, a book that combined her watercolor paintings with stories of animal rescues. Proceeds from the book supported anti-cruelty initiatives and shelters.

Swit was married to actor Dennis Holahan from 1983 until their divorce in 1995. She had no children but remained active in theater and charitable causes well into her later years.

Remembering a Television Icon

Swit’s death marks the end of an era for fans of MASH* and the golden age of American television. Her legacy endures not only through her unforgettable role as Major Houlihan but also through her lifelong dedication to compassion and justice—on screen and off.
