President Donald Trump asserted on Tuesday that Canada is “considering” becoming the 51st state of the United States as part of an agreement to be included within his administration’s “Golden Dome” missile defense program.
President Trump’s claim came hours after King Charles III, in a speech to the Canadian parliament in Ottawa, appeared to offer a subtle rebuke to the US president’s proposition.
“I told Canada, which very much wants to be part of our fabulous Golden Dome System, that it will cost $61 Billion Dollars if they remain a separate, but unequal, Nation, but will cost ZERO DOLLARS if they become our cherished 51st State,” President Trump, 78, wrote on Truth Social. “They are considering the offer!”
King Charles, who serves as the monarch of Canada and 14 other countries, earlier in the day stated that “Canada is facing challenges that, in our lifetimes, are unprecedented” and acknowledged that “many Canadians are feeling anxious and worried about the drastically changing world around them.”
President Trump began alluding to Canada as a potential 51st state last year, at one point referring to then-Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as “governor.” This year, his administration imposed a 25% tariff on non-USMCA-compliant imports, as well as 25% levies on Canadian steel, aluminum, and automobiles.
While President Trump has reported improved relations with Mark Carney, who succeeded Trudeau as Prime Minister, he maintained his expansionist idea during a meeting in the Oval Office on May 3. “I say, ‘Never say never,’” President Trump told Prime Minister Carney. “I’ve had many, many things that were not doable and ended up being doable.”
