President Donald Trump warned on Sunday that if the courts rule against his administration’s sweeping tariffs, it would lead to the “economic ruination” of the United States.
Trump’s statement, made on Truth Social, followed a ruling on Wednesday by the U.S. Court of International Trade (CIT). In a unanimous decision, a three-judge panel blocked the use of an emergency law to enact the administration’s import taxes. The panel, which included judges appointed by Presidents Trump, Obama, and Reagan, stated that President Trump had overstepped his authority and does not have “unbounded authority” to impose the tariffs.
“If the Courts somehow rule against us on Tariffs, which is not expected, that would allow other Countries to hold our Nation hostage with their anti-American Tariffs that they would use against us,” Trump wrote. “This would mean the Economic ruination of the United States of America!”
Lawyers for the Trump administration have until 5 p.m. on Monday to file their response to the CIT ruling.
However, in a subsequent development, a federal appeals court ruled in favor of the Trump administration on Thursday. This decision temporarily delayed the lower court’s ruling that had blocked the use of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to enact a 10% baseline tariff and “reciprocal tariffs.” These reciprocal taxes were announced by the White House on April 2 and were intended as a negotiating tactic with other countries prior to the legal challenges.
The Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit has given the plaintiffs until Thursday to file their response to this latest ruling, and the Trump administration until June 9.
