Will Trump Finally Intervene in Ukraine? Zelensky Addresses Him with an Unusual Request!

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has proposed a three-way summit with his United States and Russian counterparts, Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, in an effort to compel Moscow to halt its three-year invasion of Ukraine. This proposal follows previous refusals by Putin to meet Zelensky in Turkey earlier this month, with the Kremlin stating that a bilateral meeting would only occur after a preliminary agreement is reached.

“If Putin is not comfortable with a bilateral meeting, or if everyone wants it to be a trilateral meeting, I don’t mind. I am ready for any format,” Zelensky told journalists on Tuesday, with his comments being published on Wednesday, May 28.

The Ukrainian leader expressed his readiness for a “Trump-Putin-me” meeting and also urged Washington to impose stringent sanctions on Russia’s banking and energy sectors. “We are waiting for sanctions from the United States of America,” Zelensky stated, adding that President Trump had confirmed that sanctions would be imposed if Russia does not cease its actions. Zelensky noted that his discussions with President Trump focused on the energy and banking systems and expressed a strong desire for the US to sanction these sectors.

Previously, Zelensky had indicated his frustration with Washington for not announcing new sanctions against Moscow following Russia’s rejection of a coordinated Western call for an immediate ceasefire.

Meanwhile, President Trump has voiced his own frustration with both Putin and Zelensky for the lack of progress in reaching a peace agreement. Recent weeks have seen an escalation in aerial attacks from both sides, with Ukraine reportedly launching nearly 300 drones at Russia overnight, according to the Russian defense ministry. Over the weekend, President Trump referred to Putin as “crazy” after a significant Russian strike resulted in at least 13 deaths across Ukraine. On Tuesday, he reiterated his criticism of the Russian leader, writing on his Truth Social network, “What Vladimir Putin doesn’t realize is that if it weren’t for me, lots of really bad things would have already happened to Russia, and I mean REALLY BAD. He’s playing with fire!”

Despite months of US-led diplomatic efforts, there appears to be little progress towards resolving the conflict, which began with Russia’s invasion in February 2022. The war has resulted in tens of thousands of casualties, widespread destruction in eastern and southern Ukraine, and Russian forces currently control approximately a fifth of Ukrainian territory, including the Crimean peninsula, which Russia annexed in 2014.

Hours after Zelensky’s remarks, Ukraine reportedly launched a large-scale drone attack on Russia, though Russian officials reported only minimal damage. Aviation authorities stated that Moscow’s three major international airports were forced to temporarily suspend flights overnight due to the drone barrage. Ukraine reported that Russia had launched over 900 drones in the three days leading up to Monday, with thirteen civilians, including three children, killed in attacks on Sunday.

On the ground, Zelensky reported that Russia was “amassing” over 50,000 troops near the northeastern Sumy border region, where Russian forces have captured several settlements in their effort to establish what Putin has described as a “buffer zone” within Ukrainian territory.

Zelensky also stated that Ukraine has not yet received a promised “memorandum” from Russia outlining its demands for a peace agreement. Ukraine has accused Russia of prolonging the peace process following the first direct talks between negotiators from both sides in over three years, which took place in Istanbul earlier in May. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov announced on Wednesday that details regarding a second round of negotiations would be announced soon.

Zelensky is scheduled to visit Germany on Wednesday for discussions with Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who has pledged strong support for Kyiv in its ongoing conflict with Russia.
